REFORESTATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION
R&B Timber's are always mindful of the reality of climate change.
Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time i.e., decades to millions of years. Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around longer-term average conditions i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events. Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as global warming.
Scientists strongly believe that, more can be done about climate change. Not only by keeping carbon stored in trees, which is a major milestone - But, by ensuring that communities and ecosystems within the surroundings areas of forests are also more resilient to climate change. This has sparked a new way of thinking about reforestation in the minds of scientists who are leading this specific study, and is now a new work in progress.
"We cannot assume that a reforestation project for climate change mitigation will automatically benefit people and biodiversity," says Bruno Locatelli, a CIFOR-CIRAD scientist.
Climate Change Mitigation refers to efforts to reduce or prevent emission of greenhouse gases. Mitigation can mean using new technologies and renewable energies, making older equipment more energy efficient, or changing management practices or consumer behaviour.
